The history and evolution of fine jewellery

Fine jewellery has a history as rich and diverse as the pieces themselves. Here’s a look at how jewellery styles and significance have evolved from ancient times to the modern era.

Ancient times

In ancient times, jewellery was more than a fashion statement; it held cultural and spiritual significance. For example, ancient Egyptians wore jewellery, not only to showcase their status and wealth, but also to protect against evil forces. Pharaohs adorned themselves with gold, turquoise and lapis lazuli, symbolizing power and immortality. Similarly, the ancient Chinese and Mayan people used precious materials like jade, gold, bronze and copper as religious tokens.

Middle Ages

The Middle Ages were all about majestic and ornate jewellery. At the time, wearing jewellery was reserved for kings and queens. The pieces in this era were encrusted with jewels and adorned with precious gems, often in religious symbols or motifs. Intricate pieces inlaid with rubies, emeralds, blue sapphires and diamonds served as both symbols of authority and spiritual devotion.

Renaissance

The 14th to 17th centuries brought a renewed appreciation for fine jewellery. This era saw the rise of meticulous gem-setting techniques and intricate designs. For instance, during this time, many Italian sculptors trained as goldsmiths to learn various jewellery-making skills like filigree work, enamelling, foiling, diamond cutting, casting and gilding.

19th century

In the 19th century, fine jewellery became more accessible to all classes as the cost came down. This made jewellery something to be worn for self-expression. For example, Victorian jewellery often featured compartments for tiny love notes or mementos, allowing people to express their sentiments in subtle and artistic ways.

20th century

During this time period, Art Nouveau, Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery was all the rage. Art Nouveau features organic and nature-inspired designs, while the Edwardian era embraced elegance and refinement with lace-like patterns and pearls. As the century progressed, the geometric and bold designs of Art Deco jewellery took centre stage.

Today

Today, fine jewellery encompasses various designs and materials. Anything goes — from minimalist and understated pieces to bold, avant-garde creations. Moreover, contemporary jewellery embraces sustainability, and ethical sourcing and eco-conscious practices are becoming more prevalent, especially when choosing an engagement ring.
